The only change I would make from the 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough is to bring Gareth Barry in from the start.
The onus will be Everton to take the game to struggling Sunderland and so a line-up similar to the one that faced Bournemouth last time out at Goodison.
James McCarthy has only returned to the training this week so Tom Davies deserves to retain his place in the 11 with Gareth Barry coming back in alongside Morgan Schneiderlin.
My Team 4-3-3 Robles, Coleman, Williams, Mori, Baines, Davies, Schneiderlin, Barry, Barkley, Lukaku, Lookman
Everton preview press conference with Ronald Koeman – In Full
It’s all about centre-stage for me … with FOUR first choice footballers vying for two positions.
I’ve long been the unpaid secretary of the Gareth Barry fan club, Idrissa Gueye doesn’t need a champion, James McCarthy has showed glimpses of a return to his 2013/14 class while Morgan Schneiderlin has just cost £20m!
If we take Schneiderlin as a shoo in, Gueye’s energy and drive has to be the pick against a side almost certain to sit deep. He was poor at Middlesbrough a fortnight ago, but Ronald Koeman has publicly stated he has looked much improved on the training pitch.
After that I’ll go for the young guns dream team behind Lukaku of Davies, Barkley and Lookman. All three have the precocity and ingenuity to break down a team committed to holding what they have.
My Team: Robles: Coleman, Williams, Funes Mori, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin; Davies, Barkley, Lookman; Lukaku
It seems like an eternity since Everton were last in action.
And, in truth, very little has changed.
Sixth place remains the target, and with Kevin Mirallas and James McCarthy both likely to again miss out, the personnel at Ronald Koeman’s disposal are the same.
No point in messing about with the defence, even if Ramiro Funes Mori was a little iffy last time out at Middlesbrough.
In fact, the only change I’d consider is putting in the experience of Aaron Lennon on the wing in place of Ademola Lookman.
Otherwise, pretty much as is.
My team (4-2-3-1): Robles; Coleman, Williams, Funes Mori, Baines; Schneiderlin, Gueye; Barkley, Davies, Lookman; Lukaku.
